Braids after colour or relaxing: coordinate the treatment history

Before arranging braids after colouring or relaxing, share the treatment history with the person who carried out the chemical service and the stylist proposing the new style. Ask them to consider the actual products, your current hair and scalp, and the weight and tension of the proposed style.

A date on its own cannot establish that a combination is suitable. If you have pain, sores, breakage or unexplained thinning, seek appropriate assessment before proceeding.

Gather the chemical-service history

Record the dates and names of the products used for colour, lightening, relaxing, texturising or perming. Include what you know about earlier treatments on hair that is still present. If a detail is unknown, mark it unknown rather than estimating it.

Ask the original provider for relevant product instructions or restrictions. A description such as “colour” does not identify the formula or process. You do not need to guess a developer strength, relaxer category or chemical interaction yourself.

Keep general timing guidance in context

AAD guidance advises limiting chemical services. If more than one is wanted, it advises perming or relaxing first and doing so two weeks before colouring. [1] That advice concerns the relationship between those chemical services; it does not prescribe a universal wait before braiding or confirm every product combination.

AAD advice for Black hair also recommends professional relaxer application and restricting touch-ups to new growth. [2] Share what actually happened at your previous appointment instead of using a generic interval as a certificate of suitability.

Describe how the hair and scalp feel now

Tell both providers about tenderness, itching, sores, breakage or changes in hair appearance. Note when the change began and any products used afterwards. Do not assume that every short hair is breakage or that a photograph can establish the cause of thinning.

AAD guidance recommends medical assessment for changes in hair texture or appearance, especially noticeable thinning, and when a care change has not resolved the problem. [3, 4] A new style should not be used to cover a concern that needs attention.

Discuss the proposed style and its demands

Ask the braiding or extension provider how the style can be adjusted for your preferences and current condition. AAD guidance favours light extensions that do not pull and a provider specialising in the service. [5]

Agree that painful installation will stop. The AAD advises asking the stylist to stop and redo braids, cornrows or weaves if styling hurts. [6] Do not accept pain as proof that a style is secure or something you must endure.

Ask about care and removal for the actual style. A general maximum mentioned for a weave or extension should not become a promise that every braid can remain comfortable or suitable until that date.

Decide what still needs checking

If the providers disagree or important product details are missing, ask for a simpler option or postpone the decision. Keep any medical treatment question with the clinician responsible for it.

Confirm which services a provider actually offers and who will perform them. For current Luté Beauty Studio booking enquiries in Lilayi, Lusaka, phone or WhatsApp +260 772 655 231. [7] Do not infer chemical hair services or braiding availability from a general beauty menu.
