Choosing concealer for covering and brightening are different jobs

Covering a spot and brightening the under-eye area are different make-up choices. You do not need to use a lighter concealer everywhere: start with the effect you want in each area, then choose whether a close match, a brighter shade, or no concealer feels right to you.

Decide what the concealer is for

Before comparing shades, name the job. Are you trying to make one small area less noticeable, or do you want a lighter-looking finish under your eyes? Those goals can call for different choices. A shade that works for one purpose does not have to become your only concealer.

For everyday make-up, you may prefer a close-looking match and a quiet finish. For a more visible highlight, you may prefer extra contrast. You can also decide that neither effect suits the look you want.

If you want spot coverage

For a spot, compare the product with the skin around the area rather than choosing a lighter shade automatically. Think about how much contrast you want and whether you want the concealer to blend into the rest of your make-up.

A Maybelline tutorial gives one brand-specific example: its make-up artist Grace Lee suggests a slightly darker concealer for blemishes, followed by a lighter or matching shade to blend the two. Treat that as one artist's approach, not a rule for every product or person.2 If you want to explore that option, record the shades you are comparing and decide for yourself which finish you prefer.

When choosing a concealer shade for dark skin, keep your own complexion and preferred finish central. A product name such as “brightening” does not decide whether you will like the result.

If you want under-eye brightness

If your aim is a lighter-looking under-eye finish, compare a close match with a brighter option. Maybelline's consumer tutorial suggests one shade lighter than the matched foundation for under-eye circles.1 This is a manufacturer suggestion, not a universal requirement. You may prefer a close match, a subtler difference, or no concealer there.

The useful question is not “Which shade must everyone use?” but “Which finish do I want?” That keeps the choice personal and leaves room to use one shade for both jobs if that is what you prefer.

A two-purpose concealer selection card
