Damp or dry sponge? Follow the maker's method

Compare damp and dry foundation-sponging only if the directions for both your sponge and foundation allow those methods. Keep the product amount and lighting consistent, then record the finish you actually observe. Do not assume a damp sponge must look dewy or a dry one must give fuller coverage.

Read both sets of directions

Read the foundation label and the sponge maker’s instructions, including warnings and care directions 1. If only one method is permitted, use that method rather than conducting a comparison. Do not add water or saliva to the foundation bottle: adding water can introduce microbes and dilute preservatives 2.

Prepare two clean tools

Wash your hands before handling cosmetics 3. Use your own clean tools and do not share make-up 4. If the maker permits damp use, follow its wetting and squeezing directions exactly; this guide does not prescribe a universal soaking method. Prepare the dry tool according to its instructions too.

Compare the same base

Use the same foundation and measured amount for each permitted method. A pump can be a convenient personal reference, but pumps do not all dispense the same amount. Keep lighting and other products as consistent as practical, and note any differences in the skin on each side that may affect your comparison.

Look at coverage, visible edges, texture, comfort and sheen after the product settles. Record an observation rather than deciding in advance which method should win. If either method causes discomfort, stop instead of continuing to complete the worksheet.

Clean according to the tool instructions

Follow the sponge maker’s cleaning, drying, storage and replacement directions. The AAD brush article and Real Techniques brush FAQ do not establish a cleaning method for every sponge. Do not carry brush-handle glue or upright-drying explanations over to a tool without that construction.

Keep cosmetic containers clean, closed and protected from temperature extremes 5. If you want help discussing your preferred finish, Luté Beauty Studio lists Natural glam without lashes at K200 and Bridal make-up at K450; ask which service suits your needs 6.
