Do you need special cleansing before an intimate wax?

Do not assume you need to buy a special intimate wash before a waxing appointment. Check the actual preparation instructions for the area and ask about anything unclear. AAD’s general waxing advice is to wash the area gently and dry it thoroughly; it does not establish that a branded intimate cleanser is necessary. 1

Read the instructions for the actual appointment

Ask what preparation the practitioner recommends for the listed service you intend to book. An instruction for external skin should not be interpreted as advice to cleanse internally, scrub aggressively or use an unfamiliar product.

Luté lists bikini line, two Brazilian options and Hollywood waxing, among other services. Clarify the area included and the preparation relevant to it rather than treating every intimate-waxing label as identical. Use the treatment menu to identify your enquiry. 2 3

AAD suggests leaving Brazilian waxing to professionals because the skin in that area is particularly delicate. If you are unsure about trimming or preparation in an area you cannot comfortably see or reach, ask rather than attempting something awkward immediately before leaving home. 4

Keep gentle washing distinct from extra treatments

AAD’s general advice says to wash gently to remove dirt, dead skin cells and skincare products, then dry thoroughly so wax can adhere properly. It is not an instruction to perform a separate exfoliation treatment or apply disinfectant, fragrance, numbing wash or other extra product. 1

Avoid adding a new preparation step merely because a product is marketed as essential. If the studio recommends something specific, ask for the name, directions and reason, especially if you have reacted to products before. This article does not identify a wax brand or cleanser used by Luté.

Mention relevant products and medicines

Tell the practitioner about products used on the proposed area and any relevant prescribed treatment. Ask about a preparation question rather than changing a prescription yourself.

AAD advises against waxing after isotretinoin use within the previous six months and against waxing sunburned or very sensitive skin. Its separate retinol and prescription-retinoid avoidance instruction concerns facial waxing; do not automatically apply that facial interval to intimate skin or to every medicine. Ask your prescriber about your own treatment if needed. 1 4

Ask about freshening up on arrival

If you will travel from work or another commitment, ask whether there are facilities to freshen up and what the studio recommends before arrival. Do not assume wipes, a shower or changing facilities are provided.

Plan enough travel time for the answer you receive. If a preparation question remains unresolved, clarify it before attending rather than using an unfamiliar product in a hurry.

Report symptoms instead of trying to wash them away

Tell the practitioner about pain, unusual sensitivity, broken skin or a new bump in the proposed area. A cleanser cannot establish whether waxing is appropriate.

NHS guidance says to seek GP advice if an ingrown hair or the surrounding area is very painful, hot or swollen, or if it is accompanied by a high temperature or feeling very unwell. It also advises against picking, scratching or squeezing ingrown hairs. Seek appropriate health advice for concerning symptoms rather than treating them with a pre-wax wash. 10 11
