Eyeliner on hooded lids: planning a line you can see

A lid fold can cover part of an eyeliner design when the eye is relaxed; actual visibility and transfer also depend on your placement and product 1. To keep placement visible, plan the wing with your eye open, map small guide points using a restrained tutorial technique, and verify the shape across open and closed lid positions 23. Designing line placement on a resting eye lets you check what remains visible without forcing a universal angle onto different lid shapes 14.

Map with eyes relaxed

When mapping eyeliner on hooded lids, looking directly forward into a mirror with a level head is the approach used in the cited tutorial 23. In one manufacturer's tutorial provided by Maybelline India, looking straight ahead allows you to map out wing placement so that it does not disappear into the fold of excess lid skin 13. Drawing liner while tilting the head back or stretching the eyelid taut alters the skin contour; check the line again when your eye returns to its resting position rather than assuming every design will move the same way 1.

Before applying product, ensure basic eye-safety steps are followed. Wash your hands thoroughly before handling eye cosmetics to avoid transferring bacteria to the eye area 5. Always stand or sit still in a stable environment; never attempt to apply or adjust eye cosmetics inside a moving vehicle, as a sudden stop or bump risks scratching the eyeball or cornea with an applicator 67. For further context on detail application, explore our general guides and our eye, lip and detail make-up topic guide.

Place small guide marks

Rather than drawing a heavy continuous stroke immediately, place small guide marks to outline the wing's trajectory while looking straight ahead 23. According to the manufacturer technique, start by placing a subtle line from the outer eye corner towards the temple 3. Next, create the base of the wing by drawing a short angled mark down towards the outer edge of the lower eyelid, forming a small sideways "<" shape 3.

This step-by-step placement allows you to adjust the outer angle before committing to a fuller shape 2. Keeping these initial guide marks small and light helps prevent heavy product build-up near the crease line 18. Use cosmetics intended for the eye area and follow their actual labels. FDA cautions that not every cosmetic or colour additive is intended for use near the eyes 91011. If you find yourself adjusting wings repeatedly to achieve symmetry, review our practical guide on getting two eyeliner wings to look balanced without chasing perfection.

Connect a thin line

Once your guide marks are positioned correctly, connect them using light, controlled strokes 28. In the Maybelline application method, you look slightly downwards to draw a slightly curved line from the tip of the outer wing to the centre of the upper eyelid, filling in the wing shape 8.

Along the rest of the upper lash line, apply product in small, thin strokes starting from the inner corner towards the wing 8. Maintaining a thin, restrained line along the inner and middle lash line leaves adequate space on the visible lid, so you can observe the placement; this is not a guarantee against transfer 18. To troubleshoot product migration or separation across different eyelid types, see our note on eyeliner smudging, separating, placement, and rubbing.

Check lid movement

Because hooded eyelids shift dynamically when blinking, looking down, or smiling, you must verify the line across multiple eye positions 12. Check your wing while looking straight ahead with eyes open to ensure the line remains visible, then close or lower your eyes to inspect whether the filled wing connects smoothly across the lid contour 38.

Practising with both open and closed positions helps you identify whether the fold overlaps specific sections of the outer wing 1. Do not share or swap eye make-up applicators or cosmetic products with others, as shared tools can spread hazardous bacteria between eyes 56.

Remove and adjust cleanly

If a guide mark strays or the wing requires refinement, adjust the edge precisely while avoiding scratches or discomfort 28. The manufacturer tutorial suggests placing a small amount of concealer on a flat brush to clean up, sharpen, and lift the lower boundary of the wing 8.

Always keep cosmetic containers clean, and never moisten dried mascara with saliva or water, which can introduce bacteria and dilute protective preservatives 57. Discard old mascara containers within two to four months of purchase as recommended by manufacturers 5. For an ordinary beauty appointment, view the natural glam make-up treatment.
