Making eyeshadow colour visible on deeper skin

If an eyeshadow looks less visible on your skin than in its pan, compare the actual shade on its own and over an eye-area base. Use light layers and check what you like rather than expecting every palette colour to look identical on every skin tone 23. Choose products intended for the eye area and follow their directions 1.

Swatch the shade alone

When evaluating why a shade looks less intense on the lid than in the pan, start by testing the raw pigment without any pre-existing base or surrounding colours. Cleanse hands thoroughly with soap and water before touch-testing any cosmetic near the eyes to prevent bacterial contamination 4. Swatching an eyeshadow directly onto bare skin highlights how the powder behaves against your natural depth and undertone. Record how visible it looks on you; that observation does not establish a pigment-density measurement. Always avoid testing or applying cosmetics in a moving vehicle, as sudden vehicle movement creates a severe risk of eye injury or corneal scratches from applicators 56.

Compare labelled eye bases

To create a smooth canvas that allows vibrant pigments to pop, select a primer or base product that is labelled for eye-area use 1. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns never to substitute lip products—such as lip liners or lipsticks—as eye bases or eyeliners, as doing so can expose sensitive eye tissues to unapproved colour additives or oral bacteria 1. Furthermore, avoid traditional, unapproved eye products like kohl, kajal, or surma, which frequently contain toxic heavy metal salts such as lead and antimony 17.

As a named maker example, multi-use shadow sticks like Maybelline Color Tattoo® Eye Stix can serve effectively as an eyeshadow primer, a standalone eyeshadow, or an eyeliner 8. To use a shadow stick as a base, swipe the stick directly across the eyelid and blend it evenly with a clean finger 9. Selecting a light nude base shade—such as I Am Determined for darker skin tones or I Am Shining for lighter skin tones—is one option in Maybelline’s brown-eye tutorial, rather than a universal shade prescription or guarantee of colour payoff 10. Explore our broader collection of make-up guides in our /guides section and detailed feature walkthroughs in /guides/topics/eye-lip-and-detail-make-up.

Use controlled layers

Maybelline’s tutorial recommends thin layers to help avoid caking or smudging 2. Try a light layer, check the result, and decide whether to add another. Do not add saliva to eye cosmetics or improvise by adding water to dried mascara; FDA warns that this can introduce germs and dilute its preservative 6. If a powder is designed for wet use, follow that actual product’s directions.

Blend without erasing colour

Achieving a polished look requires blending eyeshadow colours well to create a seamless transition across the eyelid 3. Try softening the outer edge first and check whether you want more blending across the main colour. This is a practical preference check, not a rule that every look must keep blending strictly at its borders. Never share eye cosmetics or application tools with others to protect against cross-contamination and eye infections 45.

Check the result in daylight

Indoor vanity lighting can alter how eyeshadow pigments look, often hiding areas where the base is uneven or pigment is sparse. Compare the look in daylight as well as your usual indoor light. Decide whether you like the colour intensity on the lid and the way the transitions are blended.
