Ordering colour cosmetics from abroad: calculating the real landed cost

Before an overseas colour-cosmetic purchase, record the seller’s shipping terms, the carrier’s acceptance of that exact product, current import requirements, payment charges and the total quoted cost. Leave unknown charges unresolved rather than treating them as zero. This worksheet does not determine customs classification, tax rates or import permission.

Check whether shipping is offered

Before adding products to an online cart, verify whether the foreign merchant or commercial carrier actively provides international delivery coverage to Zambia and your local municipality. Courier coverage varies significantly between international postal networks and express freight handlers. You should confirm whether the vendor offers direct door-to-door transit, requires a regional mail-forwarding hub, or imposes restrictive shipping thresholds on liquid foundations, pressurized aerosols, or cream cosmetics. Inspecting explicit delivery terms early prevents unexpected parcel returns or order cancellations caused by restricted postal routes.

Confirm product restrictions

Ask the carrier and relevant official authority whether the exact product and quantity may be shipped and imported. Aerosols, liquids and other formulations may need different handling; do not infer permission from the seller accepting payment.

FDA consumer guidance notes that heat can break down preservatives and accelerate microbial growth 1, and warns that online resold cosmetics may be old, used, diluted, tampered with or counterfeit 2. Ask about storage and packaging, but do not treat a shipping promise as proof of product condition. US ingredient and expiry rules do not establish Zambian import requirements.

Read current customs guidance

Obtain the applicable classification, valuation basis, exchange rate, duty and tax treatment from current official Zambia Revenue Authority guidance or a documented clearance quote. The customs conversion rate or taxable base may differ from your card settlement calculation. Keep dated evidence and identify who will pay each charge. Do not calculate VAT or duty using a guessed percentage or assume they share the same base.

Record exchange and delivery costs

To calculate the accurate landed cost, document every financial component associated with the order:

  1. Base Retail Cost: The listed price of the cosmetics in the seller's original foreign currency (e.g., USD, GBP, or EUR).
  2. International Shipping and Freight Charges: The carrier fee required to transport the package from the foreign warehouse to your destination.
  3. Transit Insurance and Handling: Additional fees assessed by express couriers for documentation or package handling.
  4. Foreign Currency Exchange Rate: The real-time conversion rate charged by your local issuing bank or payment card provider at the exact time of settlement.
  5. Foreign Card Transaction Fees: Percentage-based bank charges applied to international online card payments.
  6. Customs Import Duties and Taxes: Official statutory duties and import VAT levied during border clearance.

Compare the final total

Once all delivery, duty, and currency conversion figures are recorded, sum the total landed expense per item to determine whether importing offers genuine value compared to local options. Importing individual units often incurs high fixed freight fees that significantly raise the cost per product.

Compare the documented total with a local purchase or service that actually meets your needs. Luté Beauty Studio lists Natural glam without lashes at K200 and with lashes at K250 8. An application service is not ownership of a cosmetic product, so compare the intended use as well as price.
