If your gel polish is peeling, avoid picking it off as this can damage your nails. Instead, gently file the edges smooth and moisturise your nails and cuticles to maintain their health.

Why you shouldn’t pick peeling gel polish

Picking off gel polish can strip layers of your natural nail, leaving them weak and prone to breakage. It can also cause uneven surfaces and increase the risk of infection.

What to do instead

Smooth the edges

Use a fine-grit nail file to gently smooth the peeling edges. Avoid filing too aggressively to prevent further damage.

Moisturise regularly

Apply a nourishing cuticle oil or hand cream to hydrate your nails and surrounding skin. This helps strengthen your nails and prevents further peeling.

Remove it properly

If the peeling is extensive, consider removing the gel polish completely. Soak your nails in acetone using cotton pads or wraps, following the product instructions carefully. Avoid scraping or forcing the polish off.

Prevent future peeling

To reduce the likelihood of gel polish peeling, ensure your nails are clean and dry before application. Avoid exposing your nails to excessive water or harsh chemicals, and consider giving your nails a break between applications to maintain their health.
