A pump, tube or pot changes where you handle your make-up, but none of those formats should be treated as proof of sterility. Follow the dispensing instructions, wash your hands and keep the container clean and closed. Do not choose a format on an unsupported claim that it cannot become contaminated.
Notice the contact points
For a pot, notice the product surface and rim; for a tube, the nozzle and cap; for a pump, the spout, button and protective cap if supplied. Those are places to keep clean. The FDA explains that dipping fingers into a product introduces microorganisms 7. Its guidance does not rank every pot, tube and pump by contamination risk or establish a universal suck-back mechanism.
Dispense as the product directs
Read the label before use 1 and wash your hands 8. Where the packaging allows it, dispense a small amount without touching the opening to a used brush or dirty surface. If a spatula or palette is intended, use a suitable clean one and follow its own care instructions.
Do not return product from your hand or a used palette to the main container. Dispense a smaller amount next time if you regularly have excess. Do not dismantle an airless pump to extract leftovers unless the maker provides that method.
Clean closures without adding a solvent recipe
Keep containers and applicators clean 2. Remove exterior residue only as the maker directs; do not assume alcohol wipes are compatible with every closure or allow cleaning fluid into the product. Close the lid or cap after use.
For personal make-up brushes, the AAD recommends washing every 7–10 days 5. Other applicators follow their own cleaning directions. Do not share cosmetics 9. These personal-care directions are not a professional between-client sanitation procedure.
Track age and condition
Record the date you opened the product and follow its actual replacement directions. The FDA reports that manufacturers usually recommend discarding mascara two to four months after purchase 10, not two to four months after whichever later date you first note down.
Discard dried-up mascara and do not add water or saliva 11. Do not improvise dilution of other formulas either; consult the actual label. FDA guidance advises discarding cosmetics with colour or smell changes 12. Stop use if you have an unexpected reaction and seek healthcare advice.
If you have an eye infection, stop using eye cosmetics and discard those used when the infection occurred 13. That specific advice does not establish that every unrelated cosmetic must be discarded after any skin condition.
Store and plan ahead
Protect containers from temperature extremes 2. Heat can break down preservatives and accelerate microbial growth 3, so avoid leaving the bag in a hot car. The packaging format does not remove that concern.
For a make-up appointment, Luté Beauty Studio lists Natural glam without lashes at K200 6. Discuss your intended look with Lute; no particular dispenser or professional tool-processing method is implied by the tariff.
Packaging-handling checklist
| Format | Check before use | Check afterwards |
|---|---|---|
| Pot or jar | Clean hands and any intended clean utensil | Remove exterior residue as directed; close lid |
| Tube | Nozzle and cap condition; actual dispensing method | Clean exterior as directed; recap |
| Pump | Spout condition; maker’s operation instructions | Replace supplied cap; do not dismantle without directions |
| Every format | Opening date, label and condition | Keep protected from heat; do not return exposed excess |
Add the actual product’s care instructions to your record rather than treating this checklist as a disinfection protocol.
