Trying one new skincare product without changing everything

When trying a new cosmetic, change one thing at a time where practical and keep a record of its use. This makes your routine easier to describe if something changes; it is not a controlled experiment that proves which ingredient caused an effect. Keep a simple record of the product name, application timing, and how your skin feels after each use. If you experience any irritation or skin discomfort, stop using the product right away rather than attempting to diagnose purging or pushing through a reaction 1.

Name the job you want done

Before adding a new formula to your shelf, identify the specific concern or goal you want the product to address 2. Skincare needs vary widely—ranging from addressing fine lines or dark spots to managing uneven texture or dryness 2. Defining a clear objective helps you choose a product formulated with targeted, science-backed ingredients rather than adding steps at random 2. To learn more about identifying primary skin goals, explore our main skincare guides and our foundational overview on skin basics and barrier function.

Keep the other steps familiar

When testing a new addition, keep your core daily routine stable 3 4. Changing several products together can make it harder to explain what changed and when. AAD emphasises consistency rather than repeatedly replacing products. 4 Maintain your familiar daily basics—such as washing twice a day with a mild cleanser matched to your skin type, and applying a daily broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors 3 5. Keeping the routine familiar makes the record easier to interpret, without proving which change caused an effect. 4 If your skin easily becomes reactive, see our guide on sensitive or sensitised skin for further context on maintaining stability.

Follow the new product directions

Follow the directions for the actual product: intended area, amount, timing, frequency and any warning. Do not borrow the instructions for a different serum or copy a retinoid schedule into a trial of an unrelated cosmetic.

If it is prescribed treatment, follow the prescriber’s instructions and ask before making a change. This diary is for ordinary cosmetic observations, not a plan for starting, stopping or combining medicines.

AAD’s everyday-care advice places sunscreen after other morning skincare and beneath make-up. That general sequence does not override the directions or precautions for the new product. 5

Record use and comfort

Track each application in a simple diary, noting the exact product name, date, time of day, and immediate skin comfort level. Pay close attention to early signs of redness, stinging, or discomfort. If a product causes skin irritation, discontinue use immediately rather than assuming the reaction is an expected adjustment phase 1. For individuals with darker skin tones, catching irritation early is especially vital because skin irritation can trigger dark marks known as hyperpigmentation 9.

Decide whether it earns a place

Assess whether the new addition delivers noticeable benefits without compromising skin comfort 1 4. Unless a product causes irritation—in which case it should be stopped right away 1—maintaining consistent use over time gives you a clear picture of its efficacy, as visible progress requires consistency 1 4. Changing products too frequently can result in skin irritation rather than improvements 4. If the product fits your needs and directions without a concern, decide whether to continue. A useful product today does not need to earn a permanent place regardless of later changes.

There is no universal four-week pass mark in this worksheet. Do not continue an irritating cosmetic simply to complete a row or reach a target date. Seek health advice for a concerning reaction.
