Remembering lips, ears and neck in sun protection

Make your sun-protection check about the skin your clothing actually leaves exposed, including the edges of the face and neck rather than only the central cheeks. AAD recommends sunscreen on skin not covered by clothing and specifically reminds readers about the neck, face and ears. It also recommends an SPF 30-or-higher lip balm and a hat or appropriate scalp protection where hair is thinning.90

A personal coverage map can help you remember what you want to check. It is a planning aid, not a claim that a particular body area has a measured omission rate or that one application lasts all day.

Map exposed areas

Look at the clothing and hairstyle you will actually wear. A collar, a different neckline, a hat or a change in hair parting can change which areas are uncovered. Use the mirror to make your own list rather than assuming a generic face diagram matches the day.

AAD’s wider advice combines sunscreen with shade, protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection.3 Consider those measures alongside the areas you intend to cover with sunscreen.

Lip-specific instructions

Keep the lips as a separate item on the list. AAD recommends a lip balm with SPF of at least 30.90 Select a product intended for lip use and read its directions, rather than treating a face or body sunscreen as automatically interchangeable with a lip product.

Put the chosen product somewhere you can find it. If eating, drinking or another activity changes how it looks or feels, refer to that product’s own reapplication instructions. This article does not assign one wear duration to every lip formula or claim a tinted facial sunscreen has been tested as your lip product.

Record the full product name if more than one balm or lipstick is in the bag. A container that looks similar is not proof it has the same label protection.

Ears and neck

Include the parts you can see are exposed: the outside of the ears, sides of the neck and nape, for example. AAD explicitly includes ears and neck among areas to remember when applying sunscreen to uncovered skin.90

Treat these as places to check while following the actual product directions, not as an invitation to put products inside the ear or onto an area the label excludes. If reaching the nape is awkward, consider your clothing and hat as part of the plan or ask for help you are comfortable receiving.

A mirror can make a missed area easier to notice. It does not establish that the amount applied meets a laboratory protection measurement.

Hands and hairline

Add any uncovered skin at the hairline, parting or backs of the hands to your own inventory. The general instruction remains sunscreen on skin not covered by clothing.1 For thinning hair, AAD suggests sunscreen on the scalp or a wide-brimmed hat.90

Choose a practical option for the actual hairstyle and activity instead of assuming that everyone needs the same scalp product or application method. If a product is not intended for the area, do not improvise around that exclusion.

Hands may be washed during your outing, so keep their care in the review rather than assuming an earlier application still describes the current situation. Check the label and what you have actually done since application.

Reapplication checks

AAD advises reapplying sunscreen every two hours outdoors and immediately after swimming or sweating.90 Its label guide also explains water-resistance designations and reapplication after towelling off.9 Follow the directions on your actual product alongside those general reminders.

When planning the outing, identify where you can access the product. You can choose a reminder that suits your day, but a reminder alone is not evidence that every exposed area received the intended amount.

Head-and-neck coverage map

Complete only the rows relevant to you. Keep the exact product directions beside this personal checklist.

Before leaving, check that you have the products you plan to use and know their directions. During the day, revisit the exposed areas and what has changed, rather than treating the first application as the end of the plan.
