Sulphate-free shampoo: what the label does and does not promise

A “sulphate-free” claim tells you about an ingredient exclusion, not everything about a shampoo’s gentleness or performance. Read the actual product directions and claims, then consider your own wash experience. Do not choose a formula solely because one front-label phrase sounds reassuring.

Define the claim before comparing products

Check what the manufacturer means by sulphate-free and read the ingredient list for the actual bottle. Two products using that description need not have the same formula, fragrance or intended use.

The industry ingredient reference CosmeticsInfo describes sodium lauryl sulfate and ammonium lauryl sulfate as surfactants that help mix oil and water so oil and dirt can be rinsed away. That explains a cleansing role; it is not proof that every shampoo containing them is too harsh for you. CosmeticsInfo is an industry reference, not a regulator or a test of your finished product. 1

Keep manufacturer promises attached to the product

L’Oréal’s EverPure Moisturising Shampoo is one manufacturer example. Its product page describes a sulphate-free formula and makes moisture and colour-protection claims for its product/system. The page’s comparison footnote specifies a shampoo-and-conditioner system versus a non-conditioning shampoo. Those are the maker’s claims in that context, not independent evidence that every sulphate-free shampoo performs better. 2

The same page describes fragrance notes, showing why an ingredient exclusion should not be read as a promise that every other ingredient is absent. Read the full label if fragrance or another ingredient matters to you. This example is not an endorsement or confirmation of Luté stock. 2

Read the actual washing instructions

Check intended use, application directions and warnings before comparing results. Do not assume a different formula should be used more often or left on longer because it is sulphate-free.

AAD’s general hair-care guidance recommends gently massaging shampoo into the scalp, allowing it to flow through the hair length when rinsing and avoiding rubbing it into the lengths. That is general handling advice, not a guarantee about any shampoo’s cleansing power. 3

Separate observations from an ingredient verdict

After using a product according to its directions, you can note whether your scalp feels comfortable, whether the hair feels manageable and whether the product rinses as expected. Record the actual product and routine rather than assigning every observation to one ingredient category.

A sulphate-free description alone does not establish a hair-growth treatment, an allergy-free formula or suitability for every scalp. If a product irritates you or a scalp problem persists, ask for appropriate advice rather than continuing because the front label says “gentle”.

Compare real bottles instead of category stereotypes

Avoid filling one column with “strong, drying conventional shampoo” and the other with “mild, colour-safe sulphate-free shampoo”. Those assumptions prejudge the products. Use actual names, directions and claims, including what remains unproven or unclear.
