To safely remove gel or acrylic nails at home, soak them off gently with acetone—never pry or peel, as this damages the natural nail plate. Follow this step-by-step method to protect your nails and keep them healthy.

Why peeling and prying damages nails

Peeling or prying off gel or acrylic nails can strip layers of your natural nail plate, leaving them thin, weak, and prone to breakage. Always opt for a soak-off method to minimise damage.

A gentle soak-off method

  1. Gather your supplies: You’ll need 100% acetone, cotton balls, aluminium foil, a nail file, and a cuticle stick.
  2. File the top layer: Lightly buff the shiny top coat of your gel or acrylic nails to help the acetone penetrate.
  3. Soak cotton balls: Soak small pieces of cotton ball in acetone and place them on each nail.
  4. Wrap with foil: Secure the cotton balls by wrapping each finger with aluminium foil. Leave them on for 15-20 minutes.
  5. Gently remove: Unwrap the foil and use a cuticle stick to gently push off the softened gel or acrylic. Avoid forcing it—if it doesn’t come off easily, soak for a few more minutes.

Caring for nails after removal

  1. Wash your hands: Remove any acetone residue with soap and water.
  2. Moisturise: Apply a nourishing cuticle oil or hand cream to hydrate your nails and skin.
  3. Take a break: Give your nails time to recover before applying any new polish or enhancements.

When to leave removal to a salon

If your gel or acrylic nails are stubborn or you’re unsure about the process, visit a professional salon. They have the tools and expertise to remove them safely without damaging your natural nails.

Post-removal nail-recovery card

  1. Hydrate daily: Use cuticle oil and hand cream to keep nails moisturised.
  2. Avoid harsh products: Steer clear of nail polish removers with acetone until your nails recover.
  3. Trim and file: Keep nails short and smooth to prevent snagging or breakage.
  4. Eat nail-friendly foods: Include biotin-rich foods like eggs and nuts to support nail health.

By following this soak-off method and post-removal care routine, you can keep your nails strong and healthy.
