What water temperature should you use on your face?

Use lukewarm water for your face wash. That is the American Academy of Dermatology’s advice for wetting and rinsing the face; it recommends a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser, fingertips and patting dry rather than scrubbing 1. You do not need a hot-and-cold sequence to follow that guidance.

Temperature and comfort

Start with water that feels comfortably lukewarm rather than hot. Adjust the tap before bringing the water to your face. There is no numerical temperature target in the cited face-washing guidance, so this article does not invent a degree setting for every person or tap.

The same principle applies when following AAD’s exfoliation advice: rinse with lukewarm rather than hot water 2. That is a rinsing instruction, not evidence that temperature can remove a particular pore problem or guarantee an irritation-free result.

Set aside the pore-opening routine

Do not judge a wash by whether hot water seems to ‘open’ pores or a cold splash feels tightening. Those sensations do not measure pore size or prove that a cleanse worked. Follow the actual cleanser directions and use the gentle technique below rather than adding temperature extremes to pursue a pore effect.

If visible pores are the concern, make that a separate question from tap temperature. This guide does not provide an anatomical test or claim a mechanism involving pore muscles, steam-softened debris or cold-induced vascular changes.

Keep bathing advice in context

AAD’s dry-skin guidance recommends short baths or showers, five to ten minutes with warm water, and gentle patting dry 4. That whole-body bathing timeframe is not a required facial-cleansing timer. Do not keep washing an uncomfortable face to complete a target interval.

For dry skin, AAD also recommends moisturiser after washing, while the skin is still damp 78. Use a product that suits your needs and its directions; moisturiser does not make very hot water an appropriate wash choice.

Gentle rinsing technique

To achieve a clean, healthy complexion using the general AAD steps, follow this dermatologist-recommended face-washing method 1:

  1. Prep with lukewarm water: Wet your face thoroughly with lukewarm water 1.
  2. Apply cleanser with fingertips: Dispense a gentle, non-abrasive, alcohol-free cleanser onto clean fingertips 1. Avoid using washcloths, sponges, or scrubbers, as friction can irritate facial skin 1.
  3. Cleanse gently: Gently massage the cleanser over your face as its directions indicate without harsh scrubbing 1.
  4. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse away all cleanser using lukewarm water 12.
  5. Pat dry: Gently pat your face dry with a clean, soft towel rather than rubbing or wiping roughly 14.
  6. Apply moisturiser if needed: Apply your daily moisturiser immediately after patting dry while the skin is still damp to help retain moisture 78.

Persistent redness or pain

If you experience ongoing facial dryness, persistent redness, cracking, stinging, or pain despite using lukewarm water and gentle cleansing techniques, home routine adjustments alone may not be sufficient 9. Severe dryness or persistent cutaneous irritation can indicate an underlying skin condition that requires medical evaluation 59. You should consult a board-certified dermatologist for diagnosis and tailored clinical management 9.
