When make-up brush hairs start shedding

If a make-up brush sheds, inspect it before using it again. A few loose fibres do not tell you whether the brush is safe or defective, and persistent shedding does not prove one particular glue failure. Check the maker’s care guidance, note what happens and stop using a brush with a loose join or exposed sharp edge.

Record the shedding pattern

Note whether fibres fall out while dry, during washing or during application. Record whether the brush is new and whether its shape or density has changed. Do not pull bristles to test the glue: that can damage the brush further.

There is no universal allowance of “one to three hairs” or promise that shedding will stop after two washes. If a new brush sheds repeatedly, keep the receipt and ask the maker or retailer about the product before assuming either normal wear or a warranty entitlement.

Inspect the join without dismantling it

Look for a loose handle, cracked band or exposed edge. The ferrule is the band joining the brush head and handle; movement at that join is a useful observation, not proof of water damage. Avoid adding household glue or solvents to a tool used on your face.

Check your washing method

The AAD recommends washing personal make-up brushes every 7–10 days 5. It advises rinsing the tips with lukewarm water rather than submerging the entire head, because soaking can eventually dissolve the glue connecting head and handle 7. This supports careful cleaning; it does not establish that incorrect washing is the most common cause of every shedding brush.

Wash with a gentle or clarifying shampoo, rinse until the water runs clear, squeeze out excess moisture with a clean paper towel and dry flat with tips over an edge 8. Follow any compatible material-specific instructions from the brush maker. A brand’s care advice for its own synthetic brushes is not a rule for all brush materials.

Decide what to keep using

Do not use a brush with an exposed sharp edge or loose parts against your skin. If residue or an unusual smell remains after appropriate cleaning, stop using it and ask the maker whether replacement is needed. Appearance alone cannot identify bacterial contamination.

Choose a replacement for the task you actually need, its feel and available care instructions. Price or “vegan” wording does not establish fibre retention or a guaranteed lifespan.

For an event, Luté Beauty Studio lists Natural glam without lashes at K200 6. Discuss your intended finish with Lute; an appointment is an option if you prefer professional application.
