Your first facial: build a useful consultation question list

For your first facial, ask what will happen, which products will be used, and how the plan fits your current routine. You do not need a long list of technical ingredient questions. A clear account of your preferences and anything that has irritated your skin is a useful starting point.

The aim is to leave the consultation knowing what you have agreed to, what you can decline, and what to do afterwards.

Choose one main goal

Write down the change you would most like to discuss: for example, skin that feels less dry, a gentle cleansing appointment or time for relaxing self-care. A facial mask may support hydration or comfort depending on its ingredients and your skin's needs. That is different from promising a particular result from a whole facial. [1]

If you are managing acne, eczema or another diagnosed condition, explain that before choosing optional cosmetic steps. Masks do not replace treatment for eczema or acne. [2] Keep medical concerns and your treatment plan with the clinician responsible for them.

Bring your routine, rather than a skin-type guess

Photos of product names and ingredient lists are often easier to use than a description such as “my strong night cream”. Include cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen, exfoliants, retinoids and prescribed topicals. Note when you last used them and anything your prescriber has told you to avoid.

Ask whether the proposed facial repeats an exfoliating ingredient already in your routine. The AAD specifically warns that combining a mask with active ingredients you already use, particularly retinol or acids, can irritate skin. [3] Do not change prescribed treatment on a salon instruction alone.

Ask for the proposed steps

Before starting, ask the practitioner to describe the sequence and purpose of the proposed steps. You can ask whether a mask, exfoliant, extraction or device is included without assuming that every facial includes one.

QuestionWhat the answer should help you decide
Which products and steps are proposed?Whether you want the full plan or a simpler version.
Which step addresses my main goal?Whether the treatment matches what you came for.
What can I leave out?Whether an optional step fits your preferences and skin history.
Which product instructions or warnings matter for me?What needs checking before you agree.
What happens if I become uncomfortable? How you can pause or end the treatment.

Product directions and warnings remain relevant in a professional setting. [4] Ask about them directly before agreeing to the proposed products.

Agree comfort and product-testing boundaries

Tell the practitioner about previous reactions and any diagnosed allergy. Ask what testing the actual product requires and whether there is time to complete it before the appointment. The AAD advises trying a new facial mask on small areas first and following its label. A brief sample during an appointment should not be treated as a guarantee against a later reaction. [5]

Agree a simple stop signal. If a mask causes itching, burning or stinging, the AAD advises washing it off immediately. [6] You do not have to endure those sensations to obtain a promised result.

Leave with a manageable home plan

Ask which familiar products to continue, what the actual treatment's directions say to avoid, and when you should seek advice about an unexpected reaction. Avoid collecting several new active products just because they were discussed during the consultation.

For an AHA-containing product, FDA consumer guidance advises sunscreen, protective clothing and limited sun exposure during use and for a week afterwards. That is product-related guidance, rather than a fixed recovery timetable for every facial. [7]
