Should you exfoliate before waxing?

Preparing your skin for a waxing appointment requires balance. Many clients wonder whether exfoliating before hair removal helps achieve smoother results or creates unnecessary irritation. Avoiding over-preparation before your appointment means separating general skin cleansing routines from individual active product use and specific skin conditions, rather than adhering to a rigid or universal exfoliation schedule.

What exfoliation includes

Do not treat an instruction to wash the area as an instruction to use a scrub or exfoliating acid. AAD’s waxing guidance calls for gently washing away dirt, dead skin cells and skin-care products, then drying the area thoroughly 1.

Those instructions do not set a fixed exfoliation timetable before a professional waxing appointment. If you use a scrub or an exfoliating product, note its name and where you apply it, then ask the practitioner about preparation rather than adding an extra treatment because a calendar tells you to.

Share recent product use

Certain skincare ingredients alter skin sensitivity and require careful consideration before waxing. AAD safety guidelines highlight that over-the-counter products containing retinol and prescription retinoids should be avoided two to five days prior to waxing the face to prevent removing top layers of skin along with the hair 1. In addition, medical treatments such as oral isotretinoin carry significant precautions; AAD guidance advises against waxing if isotretinoin has been taken within the past six months 1.

It is vital to share your complete list of recent topical products and oral medications with your practitioner prior to treatment. Never stop or alter a prescribed medication independently. Instead, discuss your skincare regimen with both your prescribing doctor and your beauty practitioner to establish whether a facial waxing procedure is suitable or if product timing needs adjustment 1.

Recognise irritated skin

AAD advises against waxing sunburned or very sensitive skin 1. Tell the practitioner about current irritation or tenderness instead of treating a general product schedule as clearance to wax.

Pay close attention to how your skin feels in the days leading up to your booking. If you notice pre-existing redness, peeling, or heightened tenderness, postpone exfoliation and allow the skin barrier time to rest. Following waxing, minor skin reactions usually subside quickly; however, if you experience persistent redness or swelling that lasts for more than two days, AAD clinical advice recommends consulting a board-certified dermatologist 1.

Get individual preparation advice

For clients in Lusaka visiting Luté Beauty Studio in Lilayi, skin preparation is best tailored individually in conversation with practitioner Lute, who completed beauty training in South Africa 2. Luté Beauty Studio offers a clear range of authorised waxing services, including Full face wax, Bikini line waxing, Brazilian waxing — upper area, Brazilian waxing — with inner area, and Full body waxing 2.

Because general consumer waxing guides do not dictate professional salon protocols or anatomical coverage limits, clients should discuss specific preparation needs and treatment boundaries directly when booking through the studio portal at /#/book or reviewing options on the treatment list 2. A clear product list helps you discuss preparation without guessing what the practitioner needs.
