Should You Moisturise Before a Waxing Appointment?

For the point at which waxing is performed, AAD’s guidance is to wash the area gently and dry it thoroughly so the skin is clean and dry 1. If you have applied lotion or oil, tell the practitioner and ask about preparation rather than adding an aggressive removal step yourself.

This is a preparation question, not an instruction to abandon your usual moisturising routine for several days. AAD also gives separate aftercare advice: moisturiser that will not clog pores, loose clothing, avoiding hot baths and showers, and cold packs for discomfort 2. Ask how the general guidance fits the appointment you are considering.

Name Products Applied to the Treatment Area

Instead of guessing whether your body lotion will interfere with hair removal, disclose every leave-on product applied to the treatment area to your beautician. This includes body moisturisers, body oils, self-tanners, and targeted skincare treatments.

Disclosing active facial skincare is particularly critical if you are having facial hair removal. AAD advises avoiding retinol and prescription retinoids two to five days before facial waxing 1. If the treatment is prescribed, ask its prescriber before making a change. Disclosing your complete routine helps your practitioner assess whether your skin barrier is in a suitable condition for waxing.

Ask About Same-Day Preparation and Studio Cleansing

Professional beauty studios often follow specific cleansing protocols prior to wax application. Rather than aggressively scrubbing your skin at home, ask your practitioner how they prefer you to prepare on the day of your booking.

When booking treatments at local establishments—such as Luté Beauty Studio in Lilayi, Lusaka, which lists prices in Zambian kwacha, including full legs waxing for K250 and underarms waxing for K100 3 4—confirm their specific pre-wax preparation instructions. Ask whether you should gently wash the area at home before arriving or rely on the studio's professional pre-wax cleansing routine.

Avoid Improvised Cleansing and Skin Stripping

If you have applied a product and are unsure how to remove it, ask for preparation advice. Do not improvise with alcohol or an abrasive scrub simply to prepare for a booking.

Gentle care is always recommended. Wash the area gently with plain water and mild cleanser to remove surface product residue, and allow your skin to dry completely 1. Ask what the practitioner wants you to do next; this guide does not identify the products or cleansing protocol used at Luté.

Disclose Current Skin Irritation and Verify Hair Length

Preparation also involves assessing overall skin health and hair growth. Never wax sunburned or very sensitive skin 5. If your skin is inflamed, broken, or irritated, postpone your session until the skin has fully recovered.

Additionally, verify that your hair has reached an adequate length for waxing. Before waxing, make sure your hair is about one-fourth to three-fourths of an inch long 5. If the hair is longer, trimming it with safety scissors makes waxing less messy and painful 5.
